Riverside Park

Parks & Walks

Riverside Park is a beautiful and extensive 32-hectare site located along the River Itchen. It includes six football pitches, two cricket pitches, a tennis court, skate park and three play areas. The Southampton and District Society of Model Engineers run a miniature railway open to the public on Sunday afternoons during the summer months.

Take a leisurely walk along the River Itchen, a chalk river designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The area is recognised as an important habitat for wildlife such as salmon, water voles, kingfishers, dragonflies and otters. The non-tidal section of the river supports a variety of freshwater fish, including dace, roach and the migratory salmon and sea trout. Further along the river you can see views out over the conservation area to spot some of these unusual species.

The Itchen Navigation Heritage Trail Project is a Heritage Lottery project managed by The Wildlife Trust, preserving an internationally important chalk river system for future generations. Their range of leaflets gives information on walks along the Itchen Navigation from Riverside Park to Winchester. Bargeman's Walk Mansbridge is a two-mile circular walk starting and ending at Woodmill.

You can visit the Itchen Navigation Project website for more details.
